Global employment website 'Indeed' said in a report that between August 2019 and August 2022, employment in the retail sector declined by 5.50 percent and job search in the retail sector during and after the global pandemic. The number of Indian people doing this has also decreased. According to this report, retail employment grew by 27.70 per cent between August 2020 and August 2021, but declined by 11.80 per cent between August 2021 and August 2022.
Shortage due to lockdown and work from home culture
According to the report, broadly, due to the lockdown and work from home culture, there has been a decrease in the demand for jobs in the retail sector. In which people shopped online even during festivals. This report is based on the analysis of data available on the Indeed platform between August 2019 and August 2022. According to this, the highest 22.9 per cent jobs in the retail sector were created for managing roles like 'branch manager', while this figure was 10.07 per cent for sales associate level, 9.52 per cent for store manager, 4.58 per cent for logistics and 4.39 per cent for merchandiser.
The highest interest among job seekers is for the 15 per cent store manager post, retail sales associate (14.4 per cent), cashier (11 per cent), branch manager (9.49 per cent) and logistics associate (9.08 per cent).
39.6 percent new jobs created in the country this year
Shashi Kumar, Sales Head, Indeed India said, “The festive season in India leads to an increase in seasonal employment to meet the growing demand. Although this increase is not the same as last year, but about 39.6 per cent new jobs have been created.
The report said that Bengaluru (12.26 per cent) has the largest share in retail employment. It is followed by Mumbai (8.2 per cent) and Chennai (6.02 per cent). The highest 5.5 per cent delivery jobs were also created in Bengaluru. However, Chennai has the highest number of people seeking employment at 6.29 percent.
